Break

"You look like hell."

Mohinder glanced up from the laptop behind his father's desk. He rubbed his eyes, took a second glance at the person in front of him, and lightly replied, "Thank you."

"The pleasure was all mine." Eden said coming around the desk.

Mohinder nodded and rubbed two fingers under his nose before resting his head in his hands. "I didn't find anything. I can't figure this out. I can't understand my father."

Between the ways his diatribe was distorted by his hands and accent it was hard for Eden to comprehend what Mohinder said. When she did, her face melted. "Everybody needs a break, Mohinder, even these superheroes you're researching. We all need to be careful; health is not valued till sickness comes." Eden placed her hands loosely on Mohinder's shoulders as if to siphon some of the tension from him.

Mohinder's nose wrinkled. "And what about those men, Eden? They aren't going to...to wait around...until I'm d-duhhhne taking a bre-ehh...break..." Mohinder buried his nose into the crook of his arm. "H'UFFshhh! Hh'UFshoo!"

"You look like you especially need one," Eden persisted, "so you should take a break." A steely note entered Eden's voice.

Mohinder appeared not to notice. He tossed his head, sighed, rubbed his face, and stared down at the laptop. "You don't get it." he muttered distractedly, "If I can't solve this it goes to show how well I knew my father." He sighed again and pinched his eyes shut. He stayed that way for only a second before he was forced to lean to the side and into his elbow, "Hhh'uffSHOOO!"

Eden frowned and furrowed her eyebrows. "Mohinder," she said.

"No!" Mohinder shouted. His eyes popped and his nostrils flared, and he swept the laptop up off the desk. "I CANNOT TAKE A BREAK!" He threw the computer clear into the opposite room. Eden watched with wide eyes.

"Mohinder!" she repeated and placed a hand to her mouth. "Mohinder!" she said again and rushed forward.

Mohinder came to guiltily watch Eden from the doorway. Her hands trembled like butterfly'swings as she turned the laptop over checking for unseen damage.

"H'KHFFFshhhh!"

Eden's hands stilled over the laptop. She had forgotten about Mohinder standing in the other room. When she turned around, she discovered Mohinder at her shoulder. Eden stood and faced him.

"You should take a break." The words came out much differently than before, as if said too loudly the strange balance they had acquired might tip.

Mohinder sniffed. "I appreciate your concern." he said lowering his voice to no more than a gentle rumble.

Eden held his eyes for several heartbeats. But a blink and she turned away focusing her attention back to the laptop. Her hands fumbled with it, while Mohinder sank down beside her. Eden spared him a quick glance out of the corner of her eye.

"You're in luck." she said, "There doesn't seem...to be...anything broken...Mohinder, what's this?"

Mohinder's eyes widened at the tiny brown book Eden pulled out of the laptop. He was so occupied with the sight that it wasn't until the last moment that it registered that his nose was burning with the need to sneeze. "Hhh'UUuhhshoo!" he managed to catch the first sneeze in his shoulder and pulled the second into the collar of his shirt, "H'KFFshhuh!"

"Bless you." Eden replied absentmindedly and opened the brown book.

Mohinder sniffled and rubbed his nose, "Thank you."

The book was filled with notes and addresses, but because of its size it wasn't long until they reached the end. A silver key glinted beneath the last page, a piece of tape marking it.

"A key..." Mohinder breathed reaching his hand eagerly forward for it.

"A key." Eden agreed, "But what does it lead to?"

Mohinder met her eyes squarely, "We must find out." But no sooner had he spoken when his nose wrinkled, "H'KHHshoo!"

Eden smiled. "I keep telling you to take a break."

Mohinder shook his head in spite of the way his nose twitched with a wet sniff, "The research, the key...they're too important."

Eden paused and worried her lip. "They can wait. We need you well and rested."

"My father..." Mohinder protested, but Eden had already taken his hand and was guiding him away from his father's work.

"Your father's dead, Mohinder." Eden said gently and added, "Your father cannot know what you're doing for him now."

Mohinder blinked. "I...he..."

"I know, Mohinder." Eden said forcing him to lie down. "You've been working yourself into sickness trying to prove him."

"I..." Mohinder stuttered, quite unusually for him, a professor. "Hehh'UFFshoo!" The sneeze seemed to rattle something for Mohinder and he remembered himself, "I don't know what to say."

"Then don't say anything." Eden replied bending over him. She planted a kiss on the side of Mohinder's forehead. "Just take a break."
